Whether you're choosing a relaxed Hawaiian shirt for your next vacation, an everyday polo, or a quarter zip for cooler days, this guide will help you understand how to measure yourself and choose the most comfortable fit.

How to Measure Yourself
For the most useful measurements, use a flexible measuring tape and keep it comfortably close to your body without pulling it too tight.
If possible, take measurements while wearing a lightweight T-shirt or similar clothing.
Chest
Wrap the measuring tape around the fullest part of your chest, keeping the tape level across your back and underneath your arms.
Keep your arms relaxed at your sides and avoid pulling the tape too tightly.
Shoulders
Measure across your upper back from the edge of one shoulder to the edge of the other.
A good shoulder fit helps a shirt sit naturally and can be especially important when choosing button-up Hawaiian shirts and polos.
Waist
Measure around your natural waistline while standing normally. Keep the measuring tape comfortably fitted without pulling it tightly against your body.
Shirt Length
Measure from the highest point of your shoulder near the collar down to where you would like the shirt to end.
Shirt length is particularly useful when deciding whether you prefer a shorter casual silhouette or additional coverage.
Sleeve Length
For short-sleeve shirts, measure from the shoulder seam down your upper arm to your preferred sleeve length.
For long-sleeve layers such as quarter zips, measure from the shoulder down toward the wrist while keeping your arm naturally relaxed.
How to Measure a Shirt You Already Own
Another easy way to choose your Rumrum size is to compare the product measurements with a shirt you already own and enjoy wearing.
Lay your shirt flat on a smooth surface without stretching the fabric.
- Chest Width: Measure straight across from one underarm seam to the other.
- Shoulder Width: Measure straight across the back from one shoulder seam to the other.
- Length: Measure from the highest shoulder point down to the bottom hem.
- Sleeve Length: Measure from the shoulder seam to the end of the sleeve.
Compare these measurements with the sizing information shown for the product you are considering.
Important: A flat garment chest measurement represents the width across the garment, not the full chest circumference. If necessary, multiply the flat chest width by two when comparing it with a circumference measurement.
Hawaiian Shirt Fit Guide
Hawaiian shirts are at the heart of Rumrum. Their easygoing character means they generally look best with enough room for comfortable movement while still maintaining a clean silhouette.
A well-fitting Hawaiian shirt should feel relaxed through the chest and body without appearing excessively oversized unless the specific style is intentionally designed that way.
Shoulders
The shoulder seams should generally sit close to the natural edge of your shoulders. If they pull noticeably inward, the shirt may be too small. If they extend significantly beyond your shoulders, the fit may be looser than intended.
Chest
You should have enough room through the chest to button the shirt comfortably without pulling or creating excessive tension between the buttons.
Try moving your arms naturally. The shirt should allow comfortable movement without feeling restrictive across the chest or upper back.
Length
Many Hawaiian shirts are designed to work naturally when worn untucked. Ideally, the shirt should provide comfortable coverage without extending so far that it overwhelms your proportions.
Sleeves
Short sleeves should sit comfortably around your upper arms without feeling tight or restricting movement.
Relaxed vs. Oversized
A relaxed fit and an oversized fit are not necessarily the same thing.
A relaxed Hawaiian shirt provides comfortable room through the chest and body while maintaining an intentional shape. An oversized shirt is deliberately cut larger to create a looser silhouette.
If you want a relaxed appearance, we recommend checking the product measurements before automatically choosing a larger size.
Polo Fit Guide
A good polo should balance comfort with a slightly more structured appearance than a Hawaiian shirt.
When choosing a Rumrum polo, pay particular attention to the shoulders, chest, sleeve opening, and overall length.
Shoulders
The shoulder seams should generally sit near the natural edge of your shoulders without pulling toward the neck or hanging excessively down your upper arms.
Chest
The polo should follow your upper body comfortably without feeling restrictive. You should be able to move your arms naturally without excessive pulling across the chest.
Sleeves
The sleeve opening should sit comfortably around your upper arm. It should not feel restrictive during normal movement.
Length
Consider how you plan to wear your polo. If you normally wear polos untucked, compare the garment length with a polo you already like. If you prefer tucking your polo into chinos or trousers, additional length may be useful.
Quarter Zip Fit Guide
Quarter zips are designed to work as versatile layers, so choosing the right amount of room is particularly important.
Consider what you are likely to wear underneath your quarter zip. If you usually layer it over a T-shirt or polo, you may prefer slightly more room through the chest and body than you would choose for a standalone shirt.
Chest
The quarter zip should provide enough room for your intended base layer without becoming excessively loose through the body.
Shoulders
The shoulder area should allow comfortable movement without noticeable pulling when you move your arms.
Sleeves
Long sleeves should comfortably reach toward the wrist without excessive bunching or feeling too short when your arms are naturally extended.
Length
The body should provide enough coverage for comfortable layering while maintaining a balanced casual silhouette.
Between Two Sizes?
If your measurements fall between two available sizes, consider the type of fit you prefer and how you plan to wear the product.
- Choose the smaller size if you generally prefer a closer, more fitted appearance and the product measurements still provide enough room for comfortable movement.
- Choose the larger size if you prefer a more relaxed fit, need additional room through the chest or shoulders, or plan to wear layers underneath.
For Hawaiian shirts, some customers may prefer a little extra room to maintain the relaxed character of the style.
For polos, a closer fit can create a cleaner silhouette, provided it does not restrict movement.
For quarter zips, remember to account for any T-shirt, polo, or other layer you expect to wear underneath.
Tips for Choosing the Right Size
Before placing your order, keep these simple tips in mind:
- Check the sizing information on the individual product page.
- Measure yourself rather than relying only on the size you usually buy from another brand.
- Compare measurements with a similar shirt or layer you already own.
- Consider whether the product is described as fitted, regular, relaxed, or oversized.
- Think about how you intend to wear the item, particularly when choosing a layering piece.
- If you are between sizes, consider your preferred fit before deciding.
- Do not automatically size up simply because you want a Hawaiian shirt to look relaxed.
Why Product Measurements Matter
Sizes such as S, M, L, XL, and 2XL can vary between brands, manufacturers, materials, and individual garment designs.
For this reason, the letter printed on a size label should be treated as a general reference rather than an exact universal measurement.
When product-specific measurements are available, comparing those measurements with your body or a similar garment you already own is generally the most useful way to select your size.
Fit Can Vary by Style
Not every Rumrum product is intended to have exactly the same silhouette.
A tropical Hawaiian shirt may be designed with a more relaxed body, while a polo may have a cleaner everyday shape. A quarter zip may provide additional room to accommodate layering.
Fabric composition, construction, cut, and design can also affect how an individual product fits and feels.
Always review the description and sizing information on the individual product page before ordering.
After Your Order Arrives
When trying on your new Rumrum apparel, we recommend keeping the original tags attached until you are satisfied with the size and fit.
Try the item on indoors and avoid washing, altering, or wearing it outside until you have decided to keep it.
If the size does not work for you, eligible unworn and unwashed products may be returned according to our Return & Refund Policy.
